Mizero Ncuti Gatwa, a Rwandan-Scottish actress, was born on October 15, 1992. He gained notoriety as Eric Effiong in the Netflix comedy-drama series Sex Education (2019–present), which led to three BAFTA Television Award nominations for Best Male Comedy Performance and a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor in Television.
Gatwa became the first black actor to serve as the series’ executive producer when it was revealed in May 2022 that he will portray the sixteenth iteration of the Doctor on the BBC series Doctor Who. On October 15, 1992, Gatwa was born in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda. His father, journalist Tharcisse Gatwa, is a native of Rwanda’s Karongi District and holds a doctorate in religion.
The family relocated to Scotland after fleeing Rwanda during the 1994 massacre against the Tutsi. They resided in Dunfermline and Edinburgh. Before relocating to Glasgow to join the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Gatwa attended Boroughmuir High School and Dunfermline High School. In 2013, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Acting from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. At the graduation ceremony for the class of 2022, the Conservatoire conferred an honorary Doctorate on him.
Gatwa received a position in the Dundee Repertory Theatre acting graduate programme after graduating, where he appeared in a number of shows, including David Greig’s Victoria. He played a brief part in the Dundee-set and -filmed 2014 sitcom Bob Servant. For his 2014 portrayal of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet Home, Manchester, Gatwa won a Commendation at the Ian Charleson Awards.
