She won numerous honours, including four Filmfare Awards, and is well known for her work in leading parts in commercial and independent films during the 1990s and early 2000s. The Order of Gorkha Dakshina Bahu, the nation of Nepal’s second-highest honour, was given to her by the government in 2001.

She was raised by members of the politically significant Koirala family; she is the granddaughter of former Nepalese Prime Minister Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala and the daughter of Prakash Koirala.
