Sudanese-American singer and actress Dua Saleh resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their second EP, Rosetta, was published in June of the following year after their second EP, Rosetta, was released in January 2019 to much critical praise by the Against Giants record label. Saleh began writing poems when he was a young child and immigrated to the United States from Sudan. They started experimenting with music while they were students at Augsburg University, and they eventually put out a demo in 2017.
They started working with the neighbourhood producer Psymun soon after, and they soon started playing their music live, which led to the 2019 EP release. Despite being praised for breaking genres, their music has been categorised as rap, pop, and R&B. Saleh is well-known for their recurring role as Cal Bowman in the Netflix series Sex Education. Saleh has also performed in theatre in Minneapolis in addition to writing and recording music.
Saleh was born to a family of Tunjur ancestry who were originally from Chad/Darfur in Kassala, Sudan. In the 1990s, Saleh’s family fled the Second Sudanese Civil War. When Saleh was five years old, his family left Sudan. They moved around a lot, first to Eritrea, then to North Dakota, Maine, and Newark, New Jersey, before settling in Saint Paul, Minnesota’s Rondo area.
Saleh, a graduate of Saint Paul Central High School, attributes his interest in community organising to his childhood, which included exposure to risk, systemic injustice, and resistance. Saleh pursued a double major in sociology and gender, women’s, and sexuality studies at Augsburg University after finishing high school. While attending Augsburg, they organised a walkout from their former high school through the St.
Paul Youth and Collegiate Branch of the NAACP to express their disapproval of Central’s school-to-prison pipeline. Additionally, Saleh has worked with organisations such as Neighborhoods Organizing for Change, the Pan African Student Union, the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group, and Augsburg’s LGBTQIA Student Services. 2017 saw their graduation from Augsburg.
