Her father, G. Mohan, was a Doordarshan Kendra programme producer. Hiranmayi was raised in Thiruvananthapuram and went to Carmel School there. Prior to leaving the Muslim Association College of Engineering Venjaramoodu Thiruvananthapuram to pursue a career in music, she was a student of engineering. Abhaya and musician Gopi Sundar had a live-in relationship; in July 2018, Sundar disclosed that they had been dating for nine years.

Gopi Sundar announced their breakup in May 2022 by announcing his romance with singer Amrutha Suresh. In 2014, Hiranmayi began her career by singing background vocals for Malayalam movie songs. She made her debut by contributing backup vocals in a Swahili dialect to the song Naku Penta, Naku Taka from the film of the same name. Thanne Thanne from the Dileep-Mamta Mohandas film Two Countries, whose music composer Gopi Sundar used her voice as an interlude to the song, was the song that came next.

She sang Choti Zindagi for the Telugu movie Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju in the same year. She contributed her vocals to the romantic ballad Mazhaye Mazhaye for the film James & Alice in 2016 along with Karthik.
