British-American actress Gillian Leigh Anderson, OBE, was born on August 9, 1968. Her roles as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in the television series The X-Files, tragic socialite Lily Bart in Terence Davies’s 2000 film The House of Mirth, DSU Stella Gibson in the BBC/RTÉ crime drama television series The Fall, sex therapist Jean Milburn in the Netflix comedy-drama Sex Education, and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of Netflix’s drama series The Crown are among her many other credits. She has also received four Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Primetime Emmy Awards.
Anderson was born in Chicago and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and London, England. She traveled to New York City to develop her acting career after receiving her degree from The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago. She gained acclaim for her performance as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully on the American sci-fi drama series The X-Files after starting her career on the stage. Her filmography also includes two X-Files movies, The X-Files: Fight the Future (1998) and The X-Files: I Want to Believe (1998), as well as the plays The Mighty Celt (2005), The Last King of Scotland (2006), Shadow Dancer (2012), and Viceroy’s House (2017).

She has performed on stage in plays such as Absent Friends (1991), for which she received a Theatre World Award for Best Newcomer, A Doll’s House (2009), for which she was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award, and A Streetcar Named Desire (2014, 2016), in which she played Blanche DuBois and won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Actress and received a second Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress.
In the theatrical production of All About Eve in 2019, she played Margo Channing, for which she was nominated for a third Laurence Olivier Award. She played Eleanor Roosevelt in the TV show The First. Anderson has given to several charitable and humanitarian causes. She is a co-founder of South African Youth Education for Sustainability and an honorary spokesperson for the Neurofibromatosis Network (SAYes). For her contributions to drama, she was named an honorary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2016. After spending earlier years living in both the UK and the US, she has lived in London since 2002.
